What is VTU SGPA?

VTU SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is a measure of a student’s academic performance in a specific semester at Visvesvaraya Technological University. It is calculated on a scale of 10 and is determined by taking the weighted average of the grades earned in all courses during that semester, considering the respective credit points. SGPA provides a clear assessment of a student’s overall performance for the semester.

How to Calculate VTU SGPA?

The formula to calculate VTU SGPA is:
SGPA=∑(Ci×Gi) / ∑Ci

where:

  • (Ci) = Credits of the ith course
  • (Gi) = Grade points obtained in the ith course

To calculate SGPA:

  1. List Courses and Credits: List all the courses taken in the semester along with their respective credits.
  2. Grade Points: Identify and record the grade points (out of 10) corresponding to the marks obtained in each course based on the VTU grading system.
  3. Multiply: Multiply the credits by the grade points for each course.
  4. Sum Up: Sum up the results of the multiplication.
  5. Total Credits: Sum up the total credits for the semester.
  6. Divide: Divide the total grade points by the total credits.

Example Calculation:

Suppose a student has the following grades and credits in a particular semester:

  • Course 1: 4 credits, 82 marks out of 100 (Grade Point = 9)
  • Course 2: 3 credits, 73 marks out of 100 (Grade Point = 8)
  • Course 3: 2 credits, 62 marks out of 100 (Grade Point = 7)
  • Course 4: 3 credits, 76 marks out of 100 (Grade Point = 8)

The calculation will be:
SGPA=(4×9)+(3×8)+(2×7)+(3×8) / (4+3+2+3) = 8.17 out of 10
